Instagram reels is a fairly recent feature on the Instagram app. The feature allows you to make short 15 second videos that you can edit to have audio, cut together with other videos, or add effects.
Users can share these videos with their followers on their feed and if they have a public account then they can share them with the public in Explore.
The Explore tool is another feature on the Instagram app and one that is very useful if you are trying to grow your business and increase your followers. Through the Explore page, you can share your stories, videos, and pictures with the public and allow them to like and share them also.
The Explore tool is incredibly helpful if you are trying to get more exposure for your page or business. When a follower likes your post, it will show up on the Explore page of their followers meaning there is a greater chance of more people seeing your post.
With the rise of short-form media apps like TikTok becoming incredibly successful, more and more social media platforms are dedicating space for videos. Instagram is no different and after successfully launching Instagram stories, they are now aiming to make reels their flagship feature.
Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri has said that they plan to compete with TikTok and want Instagram to branch out and be more than just a photo-sharing platform. He said:
“We’re also going to be experimenting with how do we embrace video more broadly — full screen, immersive, entertaining, mobile-first video. And so you’ll see us do a number of things, or experiment with a number of things in this space over the coming months.”
The purpose of reels isn’t just to get people to watch the content but to get the watcher to engage with the video and the poster. To do this, Instagram has to make sure the right videos are being seen by the right people who are most likely to engage with it. This is where the Instagram reels algorithm comes in.
The Instagram reels algorithm all comes down to user engagement and previous activity. The algorithm looks at the reels the user has previously liked, watched all the way to the end or had some form of direct contact with the poster themselves.
If you are trying to expand your followers or get more exposure for your business, then be sure to engage with as many people as you can. Responding to comments, direct messages and tags will show the Instagram algorithm that you are in direct contact with these people. This in turn will show these people more of your content and that will lead to more of their contacts seeing your content.
There are certain things that the Instagram reels algorithm will flag up and will not recommend to people. This is generally for videos that are of low quality and have poor content. They want reels that are clear and concise with good, high-quality images and no invasive graphics or watermarks to slow it down.
So, remember, when it comes to the Instagram reels algorithm, make high quality, slick content that looks good. Keep the subject matter light and friendly so that it appeals to as many people as possible and be sure to engage with as many people as possible in order to get your content out there and seen by the masses.
