This isn’t a question that comes up very often, but when it does it’s an interesting one. By father, what do you mean? There are many angles you can look at this from. Who founded digital marketing? Or who’s made the biggest impact?

I’d like to concentrate on who’s made the biggest impact on marketing in general. Personally, that’s how I would determine who is the father of digital marketing.

There is no name bigger, in my opinion, in marketing than Dr Philip Kotler. In this GrowTaffic blog, I have discussed the impact, not only on the world but also on myself, Philip Kotler has had.

Who Is Dr Philip Kotler?

I’ll start by introducing him if you’ve never heard of him. So, Dr Philip Kotler is an American professor who penned more than 60 academic marketing books. Whilst putting pen to paper on so many books, he is praised for his efforts in establishing marketing as a field of academics.

Dr Philip Kotler had an impact on me. I never knew anything or anyone different in terms of the father of digital marketing. Throughout the 3 years I had at university, the topics we studied, Dr Philip Kotler had some sort of involvement with his methodology and academic theories.

Dr Philip Kotler defines marketing as “the science and art of exploring, creating, and delivering value to satisfy the needs of a target market at a profit. Marketing identifies unfulfilled needs and desires. It defines, measures and quantifies the size of the identified market and the profit potential.
